Is Fiber Really Worth the Hype?

If you follow any nutrition content online, you might have noticed everyone talking a lot about fiber recently. It felt like for so long everyone has been pushing more and more protein, but that's changed. Why all of a sudden is everyone talking so much about fiber? Is it worth the hype or just getting a diet-culture moment?

🌱 What is fiber?

  • Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that isn't digested by our body

  • It occurs in all plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes

💩 What does fiber do?

  • Fiber plays an essential role in digestive health (think regular, easy bathroom trips)

  • Helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels

  • Helps promote feelings of fullness

  • Lowers risk of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and high blood pressure

📈 How much fiber should I get?

  • It's recommended to consume about 25-30g fiber per day

  • Working with a dietitian is the best way to know if you're meeting this goal!

🤷🏽‍♀️ So, why the hype around fiber?

  • About 90-95% of Americans aren't meeting the daily fiber recommendations

  • Unfortunately, a lack of fiber in our diets have increased our rates of chronic disease, weight concerns and contributed to poor overall health
