Intuitive Eating Through the Holidays

Happy Holidays!!

With the holidays coming up, we wanted to give you some food for thought (no pun intended) to navigate eating during the holidays. It’s so normal to treat holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, as “cheat days,” especially if you’ve been “so good” in preparation for it. That, my friends, is diet culture at it’s finest. That mentality is no different than restricting then binging, aka yo-yo dieting.

We’ve spent years with this mentality around the holidays, because it’s what we grew up with, it’s what’s considered “normal,” and we didn’t know any better. Diet culture is ingrained in our society, so the idea of “embracing the holidays” (binging thanksgiving stuffing and Christmas cookies) because you’ll “get back into it” (restrict you food and over-exercise) in the New Year is normalized.

At the end of the day, holidays are just another day of the year (with the added bonus of celebrating with loved ones and enjoying delicious food 😋) But, when you treat food like a reward, the holidays can become a stressful time of restricting, overeating, guilt, and then restricting again. We urge you to give yourself some grace before, during, and after the holiday season.

A couple tips to help you through it:

* Pay attention to your hunger cues while eating your holiday meals. Eat until you’re satisfied, no guilt necessary, and don’t be ashamed to go back for seconds if you get hungry later

* Pleaseeee don’t comment on other people’s plates or bodies, and politely ask your loved ones to do the same for you

* Focus on joyful movement if you want, but if the Turkey Trot isn’t your thing, rest is 100% ok and valid

* Don’t forget to eat breakfast! There’s no need to “save up calories” for your holiday meal

If you’ve felt this way before, please know you’re not alone. We, along with so many others, have been there and struggled right alongside you. We’ve done the research, read the books, and have had those honest conversations with ourselves and our loved ones, and we want to help you find your way to food freedom.
